3 Golden Rules of Swimming Pool Filtration Hydraulic Sizing

1. Pipe Velocity Limits

A 1.5-inch PVC suction pipe safe capacity maxes out at roughly 44 GPM (to prevent water friction exceeding 8 feet per second). If your pump produces 65 GPM, you must use 2-inch PVC piping or dual skimmer suction lines.

2. Always Oversize the Filter

You can never have a sand filter that is "too large"! A larger filter tank has more surface area, provides cleaner water, and requires backwashing only once a month instead of every weekend.

3. The 8-Hour Turnover Rule

Residential swimming pool water must be completely turned over through the sanitizing filter at least once every 8 to 10 hours in summer heat to prevent stagnant algae bloom pockets.

Frequently Asked Questions About Pool Pumps & Filters

Most residential pools under 15,000 gallons require a 0.75 HP to 1.0 HP pump (delivering 35–50 GPM). Pools between 15,000 and 25,000 gallons need a 1.0 HP to 1.5 HP pump (50–70 GPM), while pools over 28,000 gallons need a 1.5 HP to 2.0 HP pump (or a 2.7–3.0 HP variable-speed pump dialed down). Oversizing a pump on small pipes causes cavitation, loud noise, and damaged filter valves.
The formula is: Pool Gallons ÷ (Turnover Hours × 60 Minutes) = Required GPM. For example, a 20,000-gallon pool turned over once every 8 hours requires: 20,000 ÷ 480 = 41.7 Gallons Per Minute (GPM). Your pump and filter system must be able to circulate at least 42 GPM at your system's average feet of head resistance.
A sand filter must be rated to handle equal or higher GPM than your pump produces. General sizing rules: 10,000–16,000 gallon pools use a 16-inch tank (150 lbs sand); 16,000–24,000 gallon pools use a 19-to-21-inch tank (200–250 lbs sand); 24,000–32,000 gallon pools use a 24-inch tank (300 lbs sand); and 35,000+ gallon pools use a 30-to-36-inch tank (500+ lbs sand).
