US National Pool Barrier Code Checklist (BOCA / ICC Compliance)

1. Height: Minimum 48 Inches (4 Feet)

The top of the barrier must be at least 48 inches above ground grade measured on the side facing away from the swimming pool. (States like FL and CA often enforce 60 inches).

2. Ground Clearance: Under 4 Inches

The maximum vertical clearance between the bottom of the fence and grade surface must not exceed 4 inches (or 2 inches on soft grass/gravel) to prevent toddlers from crawling beneath.

3. Outward-Opening Gate with Self-Latch

All pedestrian access gates must open outward (away from the pool) and must be equipped with a self-closing hinge and self-latching magnetic mechanism located at least 54 inches high.

4. Non-Climbable Surface

Openings in mesh or picket fences must not allow passage of a 4-inch diameter sphere. Horizontal support rails must be spaced at least 45 inches apart to eliminate foothold climbing ladders.
