Why Proper Pool pH Matters
Maintaining proper pH is the single most critical factor in pool maintenance. When pH drifts too high (above 7.8), chlorine loses over 70% of its disinfecting power, water clouds up, and scale builds up on salt cells and liners.
When pH drops below 7.2, the water becomes acidic. This causes rapid eye irritation, etching on plaster walls, and severe corrosion of expensive metallic pump impellers and heat exchanger coils.

Frequently Asked Questions About Pool pH
The ideal pH range for swimming pool water is 7.2 to 7.6, with 7.4 being the sweet spot. This matches the natural pH of human eyes and mucous membranes while allowing chlorine to sanitize effectively.
To lower pool pH, add muriatic acid (liquid hydrochloric acid) or sodium bisulfate (dry acid). Muriatic acid is fast-acting and economical. Add it around the deep end with the pump running.
To raise pool pH, add soda ash (sodium carbonate). If both pH and alkalinity are low, you can add sodium bicarbonate (baking soda), which raises alkalinity significantly and pH slightly.
Wait at least 30 minutes to 1 hour after adding muriatic acid or soda ash, with the pump running, and retest the water before swimming.
