What is Free Chlorine?

Free chlorine (FC) is the active form of chlorine in your pool water. It's the part that actively kills bacteria, viruses, and algae. Unlike combined chlorine, free chlorine is immediately available to sanitize — it's the number you want to keep in the 2–4 ppm range.
