  • Broadcast sodium bicarbonate around the deep end of the pool with the filter running.
  • Add no more than 5 lbs per 10,000 gallons per dose.
  • Run the pump for at least 6 hours before retesting TA and pH.

Understanding Total Alkalinity (TA)

Total alkalinity is your swimming pool’s defense system. It represents the concentration of carbonates, bicarbonates, and hydroxides dissolved in your water. When your alkalinity is dialed into the sweet spot (80–120 ppm), your pH stays locked in place, preventing irritating acid spikes and cloudy water.

If your pool uses trichlor pucks (which are highly acidic), maintaining alkalinity closer to 100–120 ppm is ideal. If your pool runs on a saltwater chlorine generator, 70–90 ppm often works best to prevent pH from creeping up too fast.
